Support Green Energy, All Domestic PIS Ships Use B40!

Friday, 07 Feb 2025

PT Pertamina International Shipping (PIS) is actively supporting the government's initiative to use B40 in shipping. Since January 2025, 189 vessels operated by PIS for national energy distribution have been using this biodiesel as fuel.

According to Muhammad Irfan Zainul Fikri, the Director of PIS Fleet, all 189 ships serving national energy distribution are now using B40 to enhance energy security and promote green, sustainable energy. He stated this on Thursday (06/02).

Irfan explained that this strategic move is part of PIS's efforts to reduce carbon emissions and support the national energy transition. B40 is a hybrid fuel made from biodiesel derived from plant sources. Since its introduction, B40 has proven to be more efficient in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, making it a more environmentally friendly option for transportation, including the shipping industry.

The adoption of B40 aligns with PIS's long-term green vision to achieve Net Zero Emission (NZE) by 2050. PIS is committed to integrating sustainability principles across all its operations, focusing on energy efficiency, the use of eco-friendly technology, and the development of green energy infrastructure.

Additionally, PIS has implemented various green technology innovations to support this vision. A significant step has been the introduction of energy-saving devices (ESD) on several PIS vessels. Since their implementation in 2022, ships equipped with this technology have shown a notable increase in fuel efficiency.

Furthermore, PIS has adopted dual-fuel technology, allowing for the use of alternative and fossil fuels either interchangeably or simultaneously. The use of dual-fuel technology has been shown to save about 30% of a ship's total fuel consumption.

In the medium-term plan, PIS aims for a significant increase in its green business contribution to 34% by 2034. This effort is accompanied by a strategy to reduce emissions by 32% in the same year, aligning with global commitments from both the Government of Indonesia and the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

PIS's green commitment has received recognition. Currently, PIS holds a BBB ESG score from Morgan Stanley Capital International (MSCI), indicating solid performance in environmental, social, and governance aspects. This achievement is clear evidence of PIS's dedication to sustainable business practices.

Looking ahead, we hope PIS can lead in the green shipping industry, promoting a shift towards more environmentally friendly operations. Close collaboration among stakeholders and regulators is essential to create a truly eco-friendly shipping industry, concluded Irfan.
