Meeting With The President Of Egypt, Prabowo Discusses Opportunities In The Suez Canal Economic Zone

Friday, 20 Dec 2024

President Prabowo Subianto met with Egyptian President Abdul Fattah as-Sisi at the Al Ittihadiya Palace in Egypt. The two leaders discussed a range of topics.

Prabowo began by praising Egypt as the first country to recognize Indonesia's independence. He emphasized that Egypt is also a crucial partner for Indonesia.

"Egypt holds a special place in the hearts of the Indonesian people, as it was the first nation to acknowledge our independence during our struggle against colonialism. Furthermore, we regard Egypt as a very important country, and for this reason, we are eager to continue and strengthen our relationship," Prabowo stated during his address in Egypt on Wednesday, December 18, 2024.

Prabowo mentioned that he and Sisi discussed the bilateral relations between Indonesia and Egypt, as well as regional issues.

"Our meeting was very productive, intensive, and warm. We addressed several bilateral matters, but we also discussed regional concerns. In terms of bilateral relations, we have a solid foundation, but we aspire to enhance this relationship, particularly in the areas of trade, industry, technology, education, tourism, and defense. We have agreed to follow up on these discussions. We already have a joint trade committee council, but we aim to elevate this further," Prabowo remarked.

Additionally, Prabowo announced plans to send a high-level delegation to respond to the cooperation between Indonesia and Egypt. He assured that various topics would be addressed, especially concerning the economic zone in the Suez Canal.

"We from Indonesia will soon dispatch a high-level delegation to engage with our counterparts in the Egyptian government, as well as with Egyptian industries and business leaders. This high-level delegation will depart shortly to explore the follow-up actions from our agreements." Our potential involvement in the special economic zone located in Egypt, specifically within the Suez Canal Economic Zone, is particularly noteworthy, he explained.

Furthermore, we are considering the processing of various materials, including palm oil, as part of the development of a logistics hub. We also aspire to establish a preferential trade agreement between Egypt and Indonesia to enhance our cooperation further, he added.
