Wednesday, 06 Nov 2024

The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) has reported that the number of foreign visitors to Indonesia exceeded 10 million by September 2024. This figure is approaching the annual target of 14 million. From January to September, the arrival of international tourists increased by 20.28% year-on-year, reaching 10.37 million.

However, this number remains below the pre-pandemic levels. In the same period of 2019, Indonesia recorded over 12 million international tourist arrivals. In September alone, Indonesia, as the largest economy in Southeast Asia, welcomed 1.28 million international tourists, marking a 19.53% increase compared to the previous year, although it represented a 4.5% decline from August.

Neighboring countries such as Malaysia, Australia, China, and Singapore continue to be the largest contributors to Indonesia's international visitor numbers. The average expenditure per international tourist was recorded at US$1,375, approximately Rp21 million per visit. This figure is still lower than the expenditure recorded in the previous month, which was US$1,443.

In addition to international tourists, domestic tourism also saw a significant increase, with a total of 757.96 million domestic trips recorded in the nine months leading up to September, reflecting a 21% rise compared to the same period last year. Meanwhile, the average hotel occupancy rate from January to September reached 51.33%, indicating a recovery in the tourism sector following the impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic.
