Strategies For Fostering Emotional Intelligence In Children

Friday, 11 Oct 2024

Children's minds are highly susceptible and adaptable, which means that a lack of focus on their emotional and social well-being can lead to distorted perceptions of themselves and the world around them.

As reported by Hindustan Times on Thursday, Sitender Sehrawat, a social entrepreneur and meditation guide who assists individuals in overcoming loneliness, emphasizes the importance of teaching children that emotions such as stress, anxiety, fear, and courage are natural mechanisms that help them navigate life.

"Emotional development, much like academic growth, should be continuous and integrated into their learning," he stated.

Sehrawat further noted that establishing a strong foundation of emotional awareness and self-awareness is crucial for children to develop into well-rounded individuals. A collaborative effort from parents, schools, and the child's environment is essential for holistic development.

Emotional training should not be postponed until issues arise; rather, enhancing a child's emotional intelligence must commence early, tailored to their developmental stage. Furthermore, outdoor activities stimulate both the physical and mental capacities of children.

Dr. Kedar Tilwe, a Psychiatric Consultant at Fortis Hiranandani Hospital in Vashi, states that in addition to allowing children to enjoy and relax, such activities provide an excellent alternative for digital detoxification.

"Outdoor activities offer immediate mental and physical benefits for children and are crucial for their overall development. Additionally, children can enhance their social learning by becoming more aware of etiquette and interactions while playing outside," explains Tilwe.

Emotional intelligence can also be fostered by allowing children to express their feelings in a relaxed and friendly environment.

Providing them with a safe space free from criticism to articulate their emotions will further assist them in better managing their feelings and emotions.

To foster openness, it is essential to create an environment that is non-threatening and free from fear or pressure. Encouraging laughter and enjoyment among children is an effective method to break down barriers, stated Sehrawat.

Meanwhile, Tilwe emphasized the importance of teaching children about mechanisms that support mental health, particularly in navigating social media responsibly.

"This includes guiding them to critically understand social media 'feeds,' avoiding doom scrolling, and implementing safety measures to protect them from online scams or dangers," Tilwe remarked.
