Independent Survey: Indications Of Consumer Spending On Lifestyle Among The Public

Monday, 21 Apr 2025

The survey results from Mandiri Institute dated April 6, 2025, indicate that the public appears to be engaging in doom spending during Ramadan 2025.

Doom spending refers to impulsive purchasing behavior that individuals exhibit as a means to cope with stress or anxiety.

"During Ramadan 2025, there is evidence that the public is participating in doom spending, with lifestyle and impulsive purchases such as sports, hobbies, entertainment, and mobile phones experiencing significant growth," the report stated on Tuesday, April 15. Mandiri Institute reported that spending on sports, hobbies, and entertainment surged by 231% during Ramadan 2025, a notable increase from the 48% growth observed in Ramadan 2024. Additionally, spending on mobile phones rose by 51% in Ramadan 2025.

This trend contrasts with Ramadan 2024, where the most significant increases were seen in daily necessities such as food items and household goods, as well as durable goods.

On another note, individuals are utilizing their additional holiday bonuses (THR) to cover educational expenses. However, this can be interpreted as an effort to ensure that primary needs are met in the present. "This suggests that the public may have concerns about their future financial capacity, leading them to prioritize current consumption in anticipation of upcoming basic needs, particularly with the new school year approaching in the middle of the year," the report concluded.
