Environmental Awareness: A Contemporary Lifestyle, But Do We Truly Care?

Recently, environmentally friendly lifestyles have become increasingly prevalent, particularly among the youth. Items such as stainless steel straws, fabric tote bags, supposedly "eco-friendly" skincare products, and clothing made from recycled materials are now commonly used. 

This trend is evident not only on social media but also in everyday life. At first glance, it appears to signal a growing awareness of environmental issues. However, upon closer examination, one might question whether these actions stem from genuine concern or merely a desire to follow a trend. 

Undoubtedly, social media plays a significant role in shaping the perception of a green lifestyle. Content related to "green living" is ubiquitous across platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube, often presented with appealing and aesthetically pleasing visuals. Numerous influencers encourage us to carry our own tumblers, reduce plastic usage, and support local products. Yet, the reality is that such efforts often remain superficial, serving as symbols without a true understanding of their environmental impact. 

For instance, one might see individuals shopping at supermarkets with tote bags, yet their purchases are predominantly wrapped in plastic. Alternatively, they may buy skincare products labeled as natural without verifying whether their production processes are genuinely environmentally friendly. This phenomenon, known as green consumerism, remains consumptive, merely appearing "green" on the surface. 

It is disheartening to note that some companies intentionally exploit this trend. They cultivate an image of environmental responsibility solely for branding purposes. This practice, referred to as greenwashing, is prevalent, with many products marketed as "eco-friendly" lacking substantial evidence to support such claims. As consumers, we can easily be swayed by attractive labels or packaging without understanding the reality behind them.
