Indonesia Is Absent, And A Restaurant In Thailand Has Become The Sole Representative From Southeast Asia In The TasteAtlas Top 50 Most Iconic Restaurants In The World For 2024/2025

Wednesday, 25 Dec 2024

According to the "Best of" list by TasteAtlas for 2024/2025, only one restaurant from Southeast Asia has made it into the top 50 of the 100 Most Iconic Restaurants in the World. This establishment is Thipsamai, located in Bangkok, Thailand, renowned for its pad thai dish.

As reported on the TasteAtlas website on Monday, December 23, 2024, this restaurant, which has been in operation since 1939, ranks 36th. Pad thai, its signature dish, is considered Thailand's national dish, comprising rice noodles, tofu, dried shrimp, bean sprouts, and eggs. However, some restaurants also incorporate beef, chicken, or pork as additional toppings. TasteAtlas describes the flavor as a complex blend of sweet, sour, and salty, with a well-balanced contrast of textures.

Pad Thai is arguably one of the most popular Thai dishes internationally. Its origins can be traced back to the nationalism period in Thailand following the 1932 revolution that ended absolute monarchy. A public contest was held to create a new national noodle dish, and pad thai emerged as the winner.

Traditionally, this dish features soft rice noodles seasoned with sugar, tamarind, lime juice, vinegar, and fish sauce. It is typically served with ground red chili, white vinegar, sugar, fresh lime wedges, and fish sauce on the side, allowing diners to customize their meal to their liking, as noted by the platform.
