After several delays, Microsoft has finally begun the rollout of the controversial Recall feature. This feature is now being gradually made available to Copilot Plus PC users starting Thursday, April 10, 2025. Recall is an AI-based feature that automatically records user activity by continuously taking screenshots of the computer. All these recordings can be searched later, allowing users to review what they have seen on their screens. This feature was first introduced at the Microsoft Build event in May 2024. However, from the outset, Recall faced significant criticism from cybersecurity experts who argued that it could create vulnerabilities for users' personal data. According to TheVerge on Monday, April 14, 2025, a former Microsoft security analyst even referred to this feature as a 'disaster.' In response to the backlash, Microsoft has made Recall an opt-in feature, meaning it will not be activated automatically. Users must consciously enable it if they wish to use it. Recall can also be paused at any time, but it cannot be completely deleted. Earlier, initial testing by technology media described Recall as a 'creepy yet clever' feature. In some instances, the system was found to capture sensitive data, such as credit card information, even when it was not intended to do so. Now, Microsoft is expanding the availability of this feature to a larger user base while continuing to enhance privacy controls in Windows 11.
