Apple Builds R&D Facility In Indonesia, New Chapter Of Technology In Asia

The Ministry of Industry (Kemenperin) has successfully encouraged Apple to establish a research and development (R&D) center. This is part of the 2023-2029 investment commitment agreement between the Ministry of Industry and Apple. 

This program is one form of realization of Apple's commitment to choosing an innovation investment scheme to be able to issue Domestic Component Level (TKDN) certificates for its products. 

The construction of Apple's R&D facility in Indonesia will make Indonesia the second country in the world and the first in Asia to have such a facility. "So far, Apple has only built R&D facilities in America, only one country outside America, namely Brazil. We will be the second country outside America and the first country in Asia to have Apple R&D," said Minister of Industry Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita in Jakarta last weekend. 

Apple's R&D facility in Indonesia will certainly have a positive impact not only on the national industrial sector, but also to strengthen domestic research and innovation capacity. In addition, this program will increase job creation, as well as provide opportunities and support experts in Indonesian universities and students to be directly involved in the research and development process. 

The Minister of Industry revealed that the reason why Apple built an R&D facility in Indonesia was because it considered that Indonesian human resources were ready to support the running of Apple's R&D facility. The establishment of the R&D Center will also involve 15 universities in Indonesia, including ITB, UI, UGM, and ITS which are members of the Indonesia Chip Design Collaborative Center (ICDEC). 

The Apple R&D Center Indonesia will later focus on developing human resources (HR), which includes software development in the fields of health, Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI). 

The MoU also agreed on the activities that will be carried out by Apple, including the establishment of the Apple Software Innovation and Technology Institute, the establishment of the Apple Professional Developer Academy and the sustainability of the Apple Academy. 

The Minister of Industry also explained the function of the Apple Professional Academy which is part of this commitment.
