Google has reportedly begun internal testing of a new artificial intelligence (AI) feature for its Search platform. This feature, referred to as AI Mode, was first rumored in December 2024 and is said to provide a full-screen interface where users can pose complex and exploratory questions, with the AI responding in a conversational manner and displaying URLs for those interested in delving deeper into the topic. This feature is said to be distinct from the AI Overview or AI Summary that appears at the top of search results on Google Search. According to a report from 9to5Google, the Mountain View-based technology giant is currently conducting internal trials of the AI Mode. Citing an internal email to Google employees, the publication claims that the company is now inviting staff to utilize and test this feature. The reported email describes AI Mode as "Intelligent search that researches for you—organizing information into easily digestible details with links to explore content across the web." Google is also said to have indicated in the email that AI Mode is powered by a customized version of Gemini 2.0, which possesses "advanced reasoning and thinking capabilities." Finally, the email included screenshots of the user interface, which are considered to be an early version rather than the final product. The feature is also reported to function on mobile devices, as noted by Gadgets 360. Based on the screenshots, AI Mode will be positioned among other filters, such as Images, Videos, and News. Once users select it, a full-screen interface opens, where the Gemini-powered AI chatbot responds to inquiries in a conversational style. On the right side, it also displays the URLs from which it sourced the information, allowing users to click on any link to explore the topic further.
