OpenAI has announced a new feature within their AI chatbot platform, ChatGPT, aimed at assisting users in conducting in-depth and complex research. This feature is named "Deep Research." In a blog post published on Sunday, OpenAI stated that this new capability is designed to support professionals engaged in knowledge-intensive work across fields such as finance, science, policy, and engineering, which require thorough investigation. Furthermore, OpenAI indicated that this feature can also be utilized for research prior to making significant purchases that necessitate careful consideration, such as vehicles, household appliances, and furniture. Deep Research enables users to explore information from various sources in greater depth, rather than merely obtaining quick answers or summaries. OpenAI has announced that this feature is available to ChatGPT Pro users with a limit of 100 searches per month, and it will eventually be extended to Plus, Team, and Enterprise users in the future. The rollout is being conducted gradually based on geographic location, and OpenAI has not yet provided a release schedule for users in the UK, Switzerland, and the European Economic Area (EEA). To utilize this feature, users simply need to select "Deep Research" from the ChatGPT search menu and enter their query, with the option to attach files or spreadsheets. Currently, this feature is only accessible via the web version, with plans for integration into mobile and desktop applications later this month. The information retrieval process may take between 5 to 30 minutes, and users will receive a notification once the results are ready. At present, the output from Deep Research is text-based, but OpenAI intends to incorporate images, data visualizations, and analyses in the future. OpenAI also mentioned that the roadmap includes the capability to connect to "more specialized data sources," including "subscription-based" and internal resources.
