The Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs is placing significant emphasis on the regulation of artificial intelligence (AI) technology management. It is also opening avenues for the involvement of all stakeholders in the formulation of more comprehensive regulations. Previously, the Ministry released Circular Letter Number 9 of 2023 concerning AI Ethics. The Deputy Minister, Nezar Patria, indicated that more detailed regulations are necessary to address public needs regarding policies and governance related to AI technology utilization. "The public response to the Minister's Circular has been quite positive. However, the government needs to implement more detailed regulations in line with the evolving use of AI in Indonesia," he stated during a meeting with the President's Special Staff for Creative Economy, Yovie Widiyanto, at the Ministry's office in Central Jakarta on January 6, 2025. Nezar Patria mentioned that they are currently reviewing the forms and foundations of policies to ensure more detailed regulation of AI technology. "There are aspects related to Engine Technologies in the Personal Data Protection Law. We may later translate this into a Presidential Regulation or Ministerial Regulation for more detailed management," he explained. Deputy Minister Nezar Patria invited the President's Special Staff for Creative Economy, Yovie Widiyanto, and his team to participate in the planning and discussion of AI technology regulations. He noted that the discussions would be conducted serially until an appropriate regulatory framework is established. "At the beginning of January, we will initiate this discussion, with the hope of drafting a proposal. The exact form is yet to be determined, whether it will be a Ministerial Regulation or something of a higher order," he clarified.
