Monday, 06 Jan 2025

PT Pertamina International Shipping (PIS) has achieved a remarkable milestone by receiving a BBB ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) score from MSCI (Morgan Stanley Capital International), a globally recognized rating agency.

This score is the highest in the national shipping industry, highlighting PIS's commitment as a logistics and energy transportation company in managing long-term ESG risks.

MSCI ESG Ratings are designed to assess a company's resilience to relevant ESG risks over time. The evaluation compares companies within their industry using a scale from AAA to CCC. In this assessment, MSCI emphasizes key issues based on the company's business model, with PIS categorized under oil and gas refining, marketing, transportation, and storage.

"This ESG score demonstrates PIS's commitment to sustainable business practices. PIS is a pioneer in the national energy shipping sector, proving that business growth can align with environmental stewardship," said Business Planning Director Eka Suhendra on Thursday (02/01).

The MSCI ESG assessment covers three main aspects: Environment, which includes biodiversity and land use, carbon emissions, and toxic waste; Social, focusing on community relations, health, and safety; and Governance, which encompasses corporate governance and corporate behavior.

PIS has achieved high scores in several key areas, particularly in community relations and the management of waste and toxic emissions. This accomplishment reflects PIS's success in balancing business operations with social and environmental responsibilities.

Eka explained that PIS has initiatives and excellent programs for the environment, social issues, and governance. For the environmental aspect, programs like green shipping, ballast water systems, the use of eco-friendly fuels, and renewable energy are key to achieving NZE 2050.

In terms of community relations, we have the CSR BerSEAnergi for the Sea program, which focuses on empowering coastal communities and providing marine literacy for school-aged children. To support biodiversity, there are also conservation efforts for whale sharks in Papua and the one-horned rhinoceros led by Pertamina Energy Terminal (PET), a subsidiary of PIS. These programs involve local communities and governments.

"From a governance perspective, PIS promotes corporate compliance with regulations, transparency, and anti-corruption practices," said Eka.

As a leading shipping company in Indonesia, PIS is committed to enhancing sustainability in all its operations.

"With these achievements, PIS hopes to inspire other industry players to contribute positively to the environment, society, and corporate governance in Indonesia," concluded Eka.
